Probiotics
What are probiotics?
Probiotics are a dietary supplement containing actual live bacteria. When purchasing your favorite
yogurts, most will say “live culture yogurt” on the container. This is referring to the “good bacteria”
known as probiotics. Probiotics help the digestive tract, aiding digestions and absorption of nutrients
and boosting the immune system. By boosting your pet’s immune system, you are not only treating the
current medical condition, you are helping to protect them from infection, creating a resistance to
allergies, and even helping to prevent disease. By supporting the digestive tract, you will be improving
your pet’s entire process of digestion, “from intake to escape.”
When should I use probiotics?
You can always use probiotics for yourself and your pet. They are always beneficial! It is not possible to
create a resistance to probiotics (as we can for antibiotics) because it is not a drug, but rather natural
bacteria. It is very important to use probiotics when using antibiotics, as antibiotics wipe out all bacteria
in the digestive tract, the good as well as the “bad” ones associated with the illness. The healthy
bacteria are beneficial to recovery and further protection of your pet’s health. This is where probiotics
come into play. As your pet is taking antibiotics, putting probiotics on their food will help replenish the
healthy, natural bacteria needed in the digestive tract. Probiotics also help prevent over-growth of
systemic yeast, which often manifests in ear infections, as well itching and irritation of the skin.
