What Is Homeopathy?
Homeopathy is a system of medicine developed 200 years ago by a German physician, Dr. Samuel
Hahnemann. Disgusted with the harsh methods physicians had at their disposal at that time, such as
violent purging, use of toxins, and bloodletting, he began to search for an alternative. He found that
drugs of the time, which had drastic effects, when greatly diluted could cure these same conditions that
they caused. This is the central theme of homeopathy, the Law of Similars, which states that “like cures
like.”
In the current system of medicine, drugs are given in order to elicit physiological changes in the
body. Missing hormones may be replaced, bacteria may be killed, or reactions may be speeded up.
Homeopathic medicines, called remedies, do not have physiological effects. Instead, they work
energetically, enhancing the body’s ability to heal itself. A remedy is used to introduce an artificial disease
into the body, thus overpowering and eliminating the natural disease to which the body has succumbed.
Homeopathic remedies have no duration; their action is immediate. The body is then able to heal itself
once the obstacle of natural disease is removed.
Another difference between conventional medicine (also called allopathic medicine) and
homeopathy is the diagnostic process. Conventional medicine strives to establish an accurate diagnosis,
because the treatments or drugs are matched to a specific condition or disease. All patients with the
same diagnosis will receive the same treatment. In homeopathy, however, the goal of diagnosis is to
discover how the disease is expressed in each individual. The differences between patients are
emphasized, rather than the similarities; therefore patients with the same conventional diagnosis may
receive different remedies. Homeopathy strives to treat the individual rather than the disease.
Homeopathic remedies are produced as successive dilutions in alcohol; the higher dilutions are
more powerful medicines (remember, homeopathy acts energetically, not physically!). The dilutions are
then poured onto sugar tablets, and the alcohol evaporates. The tablets are absorbed in the mouth; they
do not need to be swallowed.
